This University  was founded in 1958. It is one of notational key universities under the Ministry of Education (MOE)’s administration since 1998 (under the Ministry of Chemical Industry’s administration before). Initially founded as an university of technology & Engineering, This University has developed into a comprehensive one with engineering retained as a core discipline with the addition of science, arts, law, management and economics coined the core curriculum. In 1997, This University was admitted to “211 project” University, and also admitted to “National Outstanding Academic Program” in 2008. Over 50,000 students have graduated from the university to date.

      This University consists of ten Colleges, one State Key Laboratory, one State Engineering Research Center, four Ministerial Key Laboratories and six Ministerial Engineering Research Centers. The ten colleges are Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Life Science and Technology, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Information Science and Technology, Science, Economic Management, Humanity and Law, Further Education, Vocational Education.

      The university is composed of three campuses (East campus, north campus and west campus). East campus is the main campus which is conveniently located on the eastern section of the North Third Ring Road, southeast of the Olympic Games Village, with a quiet and attractive environment. The west campus near the Shangri-La Hotel is located in the central section of the West Third Ring Road, and the north campus is near the Ming Tombs, a famous scenic spot.

      There are three Postdoctoral Programs, 24 PhD specialties, 50 Master Programs and 42 Bachelor programs provided by This University. Eight of the programs have received accreditation as key courses at national level and a further 28 at ministerial or provincial level.

      In addition to courses for undergraduate and postgraduate students, This University also provides training programs in continuing education and for international students. Around 26,000 students are currently studying at This University including 12000 full time undergraduate students, 4000 graduate students and 260 international students. More than 1,800 faculties and staff members are teaching and working in This University including over 600 full and associate professors, nine academicians of Chinese Academy of Science and Chinese Academy of Engineering, and five Cheung Kong Scholars appointed by MOE.

      In the past few years, faculties at This University have successfully completed over 3,000 research and development projects, more than 300 which have received awards at provincial and ministerial level or above. The annual research income is around 200 million RMB (26 million USD). Research income per academic faculty member ranks in the top of higher education institutes in China. This University places considerable emphasis on international exchanges and cooperation and currently has signed formal cooperative agreements with over 50 universities and companies abroad.
